University of Richmond

The University of Richmond’s Pre-Law Program offers Richmond students the opportunity to take advantage of a range of counseling services and study the law at the same time they pursue the major of their choice—satisfying their intellectual curiosity and preparing for the law school application process simultaneously.

Students interested in law school can choose to minor in law and the liberal arts. Students take courses in politics, philosophy, writing, ethics, history and economics, all of which prepare them for law school while still giving them the freedom to pursue a major that interests them personally.

Students who were exceptional students in high school and college can apply for the Honors Law Program, which guarantees admission to the University of Richmond School of Law after graduation.

The “pre-law” minor has become increasingly common in liberal arts colleges across the country. Schools like the University of Richmond recognize that the best law school applicants have a solid foundation in the liberal arts, a passion for a particular field of study and a familiarity with the legal concepts that they’ll immerse themselves in as law students. Richmond students may choose to earn a minor in law and the liberal arts, utilize pre-law advising resources or decide to take advantage of both opportunities.

Faculty members come from a range of liberal arts departments across campus and are dedicated to preparing students not only for law school, but for careers in the law. Philosophy professor Geoff Goddu advises law and the liberal arts minors while law professor and historian Mark McGarvie oversees the pre-law advising program.
